Alton CC Sponsors

Announcement: We are sad to announce the deaths of two long standing members of Alton CC - Jim Woods and Ian Cargill.

Jim joined ACC when he and Wendy returned to the UK ten years ago to live in Alton. Jim quickly became very involved in all areas of the club, leading Sunday Club rides, and taking part in many different club events and tours. We know that many of us will share many happy memories of rides spent with Jim and our thoughts at this difficult time are with Wendy and his two children, Jay and Lucy.

Ian was a former chairman of the club and was recently appointed a life member. He was an outstanding time triallist holding many club records. One of our members said "My earliest memory is of a struggle up the A32 to Four Marks on the way back from a ride. Ian riding a fixie put the hand in the small of my back and rode passed everyone uphill to the front of the group". We offer our condolences and sympathy to Ian's family and friends.

Covid-19: Following advice from national UK cycling organizations (British Cycling, CTT and Cycling UK) Alton CC has cancelled all time trials up to 30th June. Alton CC is organising a Virtual Time Trial League. Compete on your turbo trainer and stay at home. Go to the "Events' Calendar" page for more information.

British Cycling Statement: Riding a bike is a great way to aid your physical and mental health, provided that guidance on social distancing is followed. British Cycling urges all cyclists to only ride on routes you know well, that are close to home and that are well within your ability level - this is a time for calm recreation, not for challenging yourself. Now, more than ever, we must ride our bikes responsibly - that means only going out once a day, on our own, or with people we live with, and keeping two metres apart from anyone we meet, stopping and waiting for people to pass when necessary. We're doing this to protect ourselves and others, and to make it safe for everyone to ride.

Alton CC Dinner: The annual club dinner and prize awards was held on Friday 6th March. Simon Whiten MD of Handsling Bikes was our guest speaker. A big thank you goes to Rob for taking the photos.

New Club Kit: The new Alton CC club kit can now be ordered online from the Halo Sports Alton CC Webshop. Full details of the kit range are available in Guy's presentation to members. The special launch deal, originally offered to the end of January, has now been extended to the end of March 2020.

Halosports have informed us delivery of the most recent kit orders will delayed by about a month because of Covid-19. It's now expected at the end of April. Harry has stock of 42 items which are available for immediate purchase. Click here to see the list of available items - both men's and women's kit.

Annual General Meeting  - Monday 16th December: Alton CC held its AGM on Monday 16th December at the French Horn. Thirty members came along to hear reports from the committee. You can view the minutes here. Mike Hayward stood down as chairman after five years that have seen club membership increase and activities expand. The meeting elected Guy Henshaw as the new chairman and he outlined his exciting plans to encourage road racing in the club. All other club officers were re-elected.

Hill Climb Competition - Sunday 20th October: Our annual event was well supported with over twenty riders taking part, including one tricycle. Congratulations go to Freja Halliday and to Matt Taylor who came first in the women's and men's categories. Thanks to all who helped organise and run the event.

Alton CC Club Nights: The French Horn in Alton is the new venue for our twice-monthly club nights. Join in our regular evening rides and come along for a chat and a drink. You can see the full list of 2020 club nights on the "Club Nights" page.

Road Racing - Give It Go!: Do you want to take your riding to the next level - what about competing in road races? British Cycling has an excellent introduction that explains what you need to do. Closed circuit racing offers a safe, but challenging introduction, with races usually lasting around an hour. They can be fast and furious but are great fun and let you learn how to ride at race speed in a bunch. Open road events are held on marshalled public roads with motor escorts front and back and comprising one or more laps. Of course, if you and your club mates race together team tactics might give you and Alton CC a winning advantage! if you're in the veteran age group (40 years plus) the LVRC organises races by age group - but that doesn't mean the racing is easy! To find out about races in our area have a look at the British Cycling events list or for age banded races have a look at these LVRC events.

Club handbook: The latest edition is available here. There's lots of useful information about the club, cycling and our record holders and championship winners going back to 1936!
