Group Rides

Alton CC organises monthly Sunday morning rides meeting at The Butts at 9am as well as week day rides, usually on Mondays. New riders are always welcome to come and join Alton CC’s rides. If you want to find out more about our rides you can use our contact page. Ride leaders are encouraged to publish their routes before the ride – click on the ride leader’s name to see the route.

Following a meeting with Sport England and other national governing bodies British Cycling has published information related to its plans for a return to sanctioned activities and events in England. Subject to Government guidance, from 29th March British Cycling-affiliated Club rides or recreation programme rides for up to 15 participants will be permitted.

These rides will be subject to a series of Covid mitigation measures, including: test and trace protocols, one metre social distancing while riding, two metre social distancing while not riding, and guidance covering hygiene, equipment sharing and self-sufficiency. More details on this can be found in this British Cycling document.

Alton CC is taking a cautious approach to group rides and will initially resume group rides with smaller groups. We will aim for groups of no more than 6 riders with some discretion for slightly larger groups if the situation allows or demands it. We will review this approach and modify as appropriate.

Meeting Points: From 29th March Alton CC Sunday ride groups must form up at different points around the Butts. A new group should be formed once a ride group has six members. Riders should avoid congregating at café stops in groups of more than six. Please make sure you read and follow British Cycling’s latest guidance.

We have three ride groups to suit varying abilities: A Club Group, a Mid-Paced Group and a Fast Group. No riders are dropped or left behind on any ride. The club rides average between 13 to 15mph, depending upon terrain and cover 45 to 50 miles. The mid-paced and fast rides both cover about 50 miles with average speeds of about 15mph and 18mph respectively. All rides unless otherwise stated, leave from The Butts, Alton at 09.00. We have a WhatsApp group that keeps riders up to date on our rides. Get in touch with Becci using the Contact page to be added to the group.

The Club Group is a mixture of experienced riders and anyone new to cycling. The aim of the group is to promote both the etiquette and the advantages of group riding. During the summer months rides may occasionally be longer than 45 to 50 miles. These are identified by a * the ride leader can be contacted for route details. The group rides may not always go to the mid / fast group café but there will always be a coffee stop!

Starting in April there will be an additional, shorter version of the Club Ride of around 30 miles to accommodate riders who, for whatever reason can’t manage rides of 50 miles. These rides may or may not have a coffee stop depending on the wishes of riders on the day.

Ride guidance for junior riders and their parents is available here. Please use the contact page if you need any more information.

All Alton CC group cycling activities take place in accordance with current UK Government regulations and British Cycling guidance which is available here.
